Saddle fitting 101

Popular questions faced this week?  How can you tell a saddle doesn't fit?  A few clients have faced some tough decisions letting go of their comfortable saddles. You may ask why?  Because whats comfortable for the rider may be painful for the horse.  Tell tale signs?  Fidgeting at tack up, Nipping, and dry spots under saddle are but a few signs to watch for.  Best way to saddle shop is get a trace of your horses wither and measure the back.  He or she will thank you for it.

Its important to note the size of the gullet of the saddle as space is crucial for the comfort of your horse.  A higher withered mount would need a narrower sized gullet 6.5" makes the best fit.  Pictured above is a saddle that would fit a more mutton withered horse.  Another important thing to note is the length type of the saddle as some some in 2 style skirts  rounded and squared.  Squared work best for longer backed horses while rounded styles fit shorter more petite mounts.
